claude-monet-water-lilies-print
Water Lilies (Agapanthus) by Claude Monet

A pond with no horizon: Claude Monet’s Water Lilies (Agapanthus) as a wide panorama, on stretched canvas, framed, or on fine art paper.

Monet painted this panel more than four metres wide, and in most reproductions it sinks into murky green. Our Claude Monet water lilies print was graded beside the original, faithful to his palette but with the violets and greens separated again and the lilies catching the light, so the calm of the pond comes through at any size. It is printed as one long panel, with his signature in the lower left.

Giverny

Monet loved gardening as much as painting. At his house in Giverny, in northern France, he built a water garden with a lily pond, and he painted it again and again for the rest of his life, about thirty years. This canvas, begun around 1915, is more than four metres (about fourteen feet) wide.

A painting without a horizon

There is no horizon here. No sky, no shore, only the water of the pond. You see sunlight sinking into it, clouds reflected on top and lilies floating. With no edge to stop your eye, the water seems to go on forever. That is why Monet’s water lilies are so easy to live with: wherever you look, there is somewhere to rest.

Impressionism

Monet made around 250 paintings of his water lilies, and each one catches a different light. This one is called Water Lilies (Agapanthus). Impressionism was all about catching light as it changes, and here Monet takes that idea as far as it can go: loose, free and full of colour.

Canvas, framed or paper

Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. At 48x24 inch it fills that wall with colour. Its violets and greens sit softly with lavender, sage and cream, and the smaller sizes suit a shelf or the space above a desk.

Questions

Is this the original painting?

No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.

Will the colour look flat?

This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.

Will the edges be cropped?

Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.

Which size is right for my wall?

Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.

How long does it take?

Your piece is printed in 1–3 business days, then spends 5–12 business days in transit, tracked all the way.
