We graded ours side by side with the original, true to his colours but with the glow of the lamplight brought back, so the night feels as warm on your wall as he painted it. Choose the Café Terrace at Night framed print, ready to hang, or the canvas with mirror-wrapped edges.

A café in Arles, September 1888

It was September 1888. Van Gogh set up his easel in a small square in Arles, in the south of France, and painted this café at night. He did not want a dark, gloomy night. So he painted it right there, under the lamps, because colours look different after the sun goes down. The Café Terrace at Night painting has no black in it at all.

Van Gogh’s yellow

Your eye goes straight to the yellow awning. The gas lamp makes the whole terrace glow, and the warm light spills across the stones toward you. Above it he painted the sky and the houses a deep blue, so the yellow would shine even brighter.

Post-Impressionism

He took liberties with the buildings. But he put the stars exactly where they were. Scientists later matched them to the sky on the night of 16 or 17 September 1888. That is Post-Impressionism: painting what you feel, not only what you see. Hang it, and you are one of the people at those tables, on a warm September night in Arles.

Canvas, framed or paper

Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.

On your wall

It brings warmth to a dining room or a kitchen wall, and at 24x30 or 32x40 inch it holds that wall on its own. The 16x20 suits a hallway or a reading corner. Its blues and golds sit beautifully with navy, ochre and warm wood. Black or dark wood frames deepen the night; natural wood picks up the awning.

Questions

Is this the original painting?

No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.

Will the colour look flat?

This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.

Will the edges be cropped?

Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.

Which size is right for my wall?

Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.

How long does it take?

Your piece is printed in 1–3 business days, then spends 5–12 business days in transit, tracked all the way. Delivery is free anywhere in the US. We are unable to deliver to PO boxes.

What if it arrives damaged?

Send us a photograph and we will remake it and send it again.
