The tall, dark cypresses of the south had caught his eye, and he painted them again and again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"story\"\u003eScotch plaid\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn early July he wrote to his brother: “I have a canvas of cypresses with some ears of wheat, some poppies, a blue sky like a piece of Scotch plaid.” This is that canvas, probably painted out in the field, the wheat ripe and gold, the clouds curling across the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"story\"\u003eOne of his best\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe counted it among his best summer pictures, and in September he painted it twice more in his studio: one is in the National Gallery in London, a smaller one he gave to his mother and sister.
