Somebody you know has just bought their first house. You want to mark it. The problem is that the entire category of housewarming gift is either consumable, decorative in a way that assumes you know their taste, or a duplicate of something four other people are also bringing.

- Ask them directly. Genuinely fine. "Send me a photo of the front of the house" is a strange enough request that it reads as a surprise without giving away what the surprise is.
