Claude Monet
Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat
From $100
This garden is full of sunlight, blue pots and bright flowers, and a dull copy dims them all. Our Monet Artist’s House at Argenteuil print was graded against the Art Institute of Chicago’s own photograph, so the blues stay bright, the vines stay green and the summer sky keeps its clouds.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
20x16 inch, 30x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its sunny greens and blues suit a kitchen, a hallway or a child’s room. They look lovely with white, cream and natural oak, and a natural or white frame keeps it summery.
About the painting
Monet and his family lived at Argenteuil, a town on the Seine just outside Paris, from 1871 to 1878. In 1873 things were going well: the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel had been buying his pictures, and for once there was money.
He painted his own garden on a fine day. His son Jean, five or six years old, stands on the path with a hoop, and Camille waits in the doorway of their house, which is covered in vines. Blue-and-white pots of flowers line the way.
The neat garden was a first sketch of the great garden he would later make at Giverny. It came to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1933.
For most of his early life, Claude Monet never had enough money. This painting comes from one of the few good years.
It's 1873. Monet and his family live at Argenteuil, a town on the Seine just outside Paris.
A dealer named Paul Durand-Ruel has been buying his pictures, and for once, the bills are paid.
So on a fine day, he paints his own home.
His son Jean, who's five or six, stands on the garden path with his hoop. His wife Camille waits in the doorway of the house, which is covered in green vines.
Blue-and-white pots of flowers line the path, and white clouds drift across the sky.
It's a picture of a family at peace. And it's a first sketch of something bigger.
Ten years later, Monet would begin the great garden at Giverny that made him famous. It started here, with a few pots on a path.
Today the painting belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Step into the garden with Jean, and enjoy the good year while it lasts.
The Artist's House at Argenteuil. Claude Monet, 1873.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
