Snow is the hardest thing to reproduce: too bright and it goes flat white, too dull and it turns grey. Our Monet Magpie print was graded beside the original so the snow keeps its cream, lilac and blue, and the small black magpie on the gate stays the sharpest point in the picture. It is a winter painting full of light.

Canvas, framed or paper

Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.

Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.

Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.

Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.

Sizes

18x12 inch, 24x16 inch, 30x20 inch, 36x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.

On your wall

It brightens a hallway, a dining room or a white-walled living room, and it is a natural choice for the winter months. The creams and soft blues sit well with linen, pale wood and grey, and a white or natural wood frame keeps the snow glowing.

About the painting

The Magpie by Claude Monet

A winter morning

Monet painted The Magpie in 1868. Fresh snow covers a field, a fence and the roofs of a farmhouse. The sun is low, and the trees cast long shadows across the snow. On a small wooden gate sits a single magpie, the only dark thing in a world of white.

Shadows that are blue

Look at the shadows. They are not grey or black. Monet painted them blue and lilac, because that is the colour shadows really are on snow under a clear sky. Few painters had looked so closely at light before, and it is one of the ideas that would become Impressionism.

Where it lives

The Magpie belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and it is a large canvas, about 89 by 130 centimetres. In a warm room it brings a feeling of crisp, bright cold.

Read the story

Claude Monet once painted a winter morning that the judges in Paris refused to hang. Look at the snow, and you'll see why.

It's December 1868, at Étretat, on the coast of Normandy.

Monet is twenty-eight, and he has no money.

A kind man from the nearby port has found him a little cottage, and paid him to paint three portraits.

So Monet is here with Camille and their baby son, Jean, far from his father, who doesn't approve.

Outside, the fields are deep in snow.

One morning he carries a big white canvas out into the cold.

The sun is low and climbing, and the light changes every minute.

So he works on the whole picture at once, racing the morning, instead of one corner at a time.

And he looks hard at the shadows. They aren't grey: in the shade the snow is blue, and in the sun, gold.

On a little wooden gate he paints a single magpie, the only dark thing in a world of white.

A few weeks later he writes to his friend Bazille, asking him to buy some paint, and promising to pay him back.

In the spring, the judges of the great Paris Salon look at his snow, and turn it away.

Today people stand in front of it in Paris for a long time. Even in a warm room, it feels cold.

Step out onto the snow. The magpie is waiting on the gate.

The Magpie. Claude Monet, 1868.

Questions

Is this the original painting?

No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.

Will the colour look flat?

This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.

Will the edges be cropped?

Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.

Which size is right for my wall?

Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
