Claude Monet
Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat
From $100
This is Monet the young painter of boats and sky, and in a dull copy the sky loses its blue and the water goes flat. Our Monet Seine at Rouen print was graded beside the original, so the clouds stay white, the river sparkles and the dark hulls keep their weight. His signature sits in the lower left, as he painted it.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
20x16 inch, 30x24 inch, 40x32 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its near-square shape suits a study, a hallway or a bedroom wall, and the sea-blue palette is at home by the coast or in any room with navy, white and natural wood. A black or dark wood frame gives the ships their weight.
About the painting
Rouen is an old city on the river Seine in northern France, and in Monet’s time big sailing ships came up the river to its docks. In 1872 he painted two of them riding at anchor, with the town and its spires on the far bank and white clouds racing across the sky.
Monet loved water because it never stays still. Here the river is made of quick dabs of blue, white and brown, and the reflections of the masts break into wavy lines. It is the kind of everyday scene, painted fast and in the open air, that made the Impressionists famous.
The painting belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. It is small, about 38 by 46 centimetres, which makes our larger sizes a chance to see its brushwork bigger than life.
Claude Monet painted these two ships while visiting his big brother, a man who sold colours for a living.
It's 1872, in Rouen, an old city on the river Seine.
Claude is thirty-one, and his brother Léon is four years older.
Léon works for a company making something new: bright dyes made by chemistry, for colouring cloth.
That year Léon hangs one of Claude's paintings in the city's art show, with his own name in the catalogue.
And Claude paints the city, eleven pictures on a single visit.
Down at the river, two tall sailing ships ride at anchor, one near the bank and one a little farther out.
Beyond them lies a far shore of trees and roofs, with clouds hurrying across the sky.
The water is made of quick dabs of blue, white and brown, and the masts break into wavy lines beneath them.
It's a small painting. You could almost hold it in your two hands.
Later it belongs to a rich collector in Paris, until his collection is sold in 1878.
Then it passes from hand to hand, through Paris, London and New York, until in 1970 it's given to a museum in Washington, for everyone.
No letters between the two brothers survive. All we have are the pictures.
The ships are still waiting for the tide. Stand on the quay beside them.
Ships Riding on the Seine at Rouen. Claude Monet, 1872.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
