Arnold Böcklin
Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle
From $100
This is a painting of soft greys, greens and blues, and a careless copy makes it dull and dark. Our Erik Theodor Werenskiold Mirroring print was graded beside the original so the water stays pale and calm and the sails stay bright.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x16 inch, 20x20 inch, 24x24 inch, 30x30 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its square shape is calm above a bed, a console or a reading chair, and it suits a coastal or Scandinavian room. The greys, greens and soft blues look lovely with white, linen and pale oak, and a natural wood frame suits it.
About the painting
Erik Werenskiold was one of Norway’s best-loved artists, the illustrator of its fairy tales and the painter of Ibsen and Grieg. At sixty he lived at Lysaker, on the water just outside Oslo, and painted what he saw from the shore.
Two white sailboats rest on water so still that each one has a twin hanging upside down beneath it. Dark pines stand in front, close enough to touch. The picture is nearly square, and almost everything in it is reflected.
He painted it in broad, flat areas of colour on linen. It was shown in Oslo in 1935, and Norway’s National Museum bought it at auction in 2021.
Erik Werenskiold painted two sailboats, and their twins.
It's 1915, at Lysaker, on the water just outside Oslo. Werenskiold is sixty.
He's one of Norway's best-known artists. As a young man he drew the pictures for the country's folk tales, and later he painted Ibsen, and Grieg, and the explorer Nansen.
Now he paints the water near his home.
It's a still day. Two white sailboats rest on the water, their sails up, hardly moving.
The water is so calm that each one has a twin, hanging upside down beneath it.
Dark pines stand right in front of us, close enough to touch.
He paints it in broad, flat areas of colour, grey and green and pale blue, on a canvas that's nearly square.
Twenty years later, in 1935, it hangs in an exhibition in Oslo. In 2021, Norway's National Museum bought it at auction.
Look down at the water. Everything you see is there twice.
Mirroring. Erik Werenskiold, 1915.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
