Gustav Klimt
The Sunflower
From $80
Klimt painted every flower in this garden with care, and a soft, dull print turns them into a green blur. Our Klimt Farm Garden with Sunflowers print was graded beside the original so each bloom stays crisp and the sunflowers, pinks and blues keep their summer colour.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x16 inch, 20x20 inch, 24x24 inch, 30x30 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its square shape is beautiful above a sideboard, a bed or a console, and it suits a sunny breakfast room. The greens, pinks and blues look lovely with white, sage and natural wood, and a natural or white frame keeps it fresh.
About the painting
Gustav Klimt is famous for his gold portraits, like The Kiss, painted in the same years as this garden. But every summer he left Vienna for a lake in the Austrian mountains, the Attersee, with his companion Emilie Flöge’s family, and painted landscapes.
To find a view, Klimt held up a little square frame he had cut from cardboard. Here he framed a country flower garden so tightly that the blossoms run off every edge. There is no sky and no horizon, only flowers, with sunflowers standing tall at the top.
Without depth the garden turns into a pattern, almost like a carpet, which is what one critic said of Viennese painting. The square canvas, 110 centimetres on each side, belongs to the Belvedere in Vienna.
Gustav Klimt painted a garden with no sky in it at all.
It's around 1907. Klimt is in his forties, and the leader of Vienna's young painters.
In the city he paints golden portraits. These are the years of The Kiss.
But every summer he leaves Vienna for a lake in the mountains, the Attersee, with his companion Emilie Flöge and her family.
The local people call him the forest demon. Out there, he paints nothing but landscapes.
To find a view, he holds up a little square frame he has cut out of cardboard, and looks through it.
Here he finds a farm garden, and frames it so tightly that the flowers run off every edge.
Pink, blue, white and red blossoms crowd together, with tall sunflowers at the top. There's no path, no sky, no horizon.
Without any depth, the garden turns into a pattern, almost like a carpet.
He paints every flower with care, on a square canvas more than a metre wide.
Today it hangs in the Belvedere, in Vienna.
Hold up your own square, and let the flowers fill it.
Farm Garden with Sunflowers. Gustav Klimt, 1907.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
