Gustav Klimt
The Sunflower
From $80
Klimt painted every flower here in a small dab of colour, and a soft copy blurs them into green. Our Italian Garden Landscape Klimt canvas and print were graded beside the original so each pink, red and blue bloom stays crisp against the greens.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x16 inch, 20x20 inch, 24x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its square shape is lovely above a bed, a console or a reading chair, and it brings summer to a kitchen or breakfast room. The greens, pinks and blues look fresh with white, sage and pale oak, and a natural or white frame suits it.
About the painting
Gustav Klimt spent almost every summer at the Attersee, a lake in the Austrian mountains, painting landscapes. In the summer of 1913 he went to Italy instead, for fifteen days with friends at Lake Garda.
They stayed at the Albergo Morandi, a hotel in the village of Cassone. In its garden Klimt set up a square canvas and painted a slope of flowers so close that there is no sky at all, only blossoms, with a roof showing at the top right.
He painted three landscapes on that trip, each 110 centimetres square. One of them, Malcesine on Lake Garda, has been lost since 1945. This one belongs to the Kunsthaus Zug in Switzerland.
Gustav Klimt spent almost every summer at the same lake in Austria. In 1913, for once, he went somewhere else.
He's fifty-one. Five years earlier, the Austrian state bought his painting The Kiss.
By now the gold has gone from his work. He paints in bright colours and patterns instead.
Every summer he leaves Vienna for the Attersee, with his companion Emilie Flöge and her family, and paints landscapes.
But in July 1913 he travels south with friends, to Lake Garda, in Italy, for fifteen days.
They stay at a hotel called the Albergo Morandi, in a village called Cassone.
In the hotel garden Klimt sets up a square canvas, more than a metre on each side.
He paints a slope of flowers, pink and white and red and blue, so close that there's no sky at all. Only a roof peeps in at the top right corner.
He paints three landscapes on that trip. One of them, of the village of Malcesine, has been lost since 1945.
Less than five years later, in February 1918, Klimt dies, aged fifty-five.
This one survived. Today it hangs in the Kunsthaus Zug, in Switzerland.
Step into that hotel garden, and let the flowers fill your square.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
