Gustav Klimt
The Sunflower
From $80
The original glows with real gold leaf, and a flat copy turns it to mustard. Our Klimt the kiss print was graded against a full-resolution photograph of the original, so the golds stay warm, the patterns stay crisp and the meadow keeps every flower.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x16 inch, 20x20 inch, 24x24 inch, 30x30 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its square shape suits a bedroom, a living room or the wall above a bed. The golds look rich with cream, black and deep green, and a gold or black frame brings out the shine.
About the painting
Gustav Klimt was famous in Vienna, and controversial. His ceiling paintings for the university had just been attacked as indecent, and he had answered: if you cannot please everyone, please a few.
A few years earlier, in Ravenna, he had seen the glittering gold Byzantine mosaics, and he began to paint with real gold and silver leaf. Here a couple embrace at the edge of a meadow of flowers: his robe is black-and-white squares, hers is full of flowers, and her eyes are closed.
When it was shown in Vienna in 1908, the Austrian state bought it, still unfinished. It hangs in the Upper Belvedere palace in Vienna.
The gold in this painting is real. And it came from a church in Italy.
In 1903, Gustav Klimt travels to Ravenna. In the old church of San Vitale he sees the Byzantine mosaics, walls of glittering gold, flat and shining, with no depth at all.
He goes home to Vienna and starts to paint with real gold and silver leaf.
It isn't an easy time. His huge ceiling paintings for the university have been attacked as indecent. If you can't please everyone, he says, please a few.
In 1907 and 1908 he paints The Kiss.
A couple embrace at the edge of a meadow full of flowers, against a sky of gold. His robe is covered in black and white squares. Hers is full of flowers. His face is hidden as he kisses her cheek, and her eyes are closed.
Who are they? Some think it's Klimt himself and his companion, Emilie Flöge. Nobody knows for sure.
When it's shown in Vienna in 1908, the Austrian state buys it, before it's even finished.
Today it hangs in the Belvedere Palace, in Vienna.
Close your eyes, like she does, and let the gold glow.
The Kiss. Gustav Klimt, 1907 to 1908.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
