John Singer Sargent
Mrs. Charles Deering
From $100
This little arbour is all dappled sunlight, cool shade and a gleam of red wine, and a dull copy turns the shadows to mud. Our John Singer Sargent wineglasses print was graded against a full-resolution photograph of the original, so the sunlight stays warm and the glasses keep their glow.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x20 inch, 24x30 inch, 32x40 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its upright shape suits a kitchen, a dining room or a small wall by a bar cart. The greens, creams and wine red look lovely with sage, linen and warm wood, and a natural wood or black frame suits it.
About the painting
In May 1874 John Singer Sargent, eighteen years old, became a pupil of the portrait painter Carolus-Duran in Paris. Probably the next summer he painted this at Grez-sur-Loing, a village on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest that he called very pretty but a very nest of Bohemians.
Sunlight falls through a trellis and leaves onto a table with a white cloth. In front, on a silver tray, stand two glasses of red wine, perhaps for a couple we never see. He painted it fast, wet paint into wet, watching how the cloth and the glasses catch the colours around them.
Sargent gave the picture to Carolus-Duran. It passed through Paris dealers and English collections, and in 2018 it came to the National Gallery in London.
Two glasses of wine, and nobody there to drink them.
In May 1874, John Singer Sargent is eighteen, an American raised in Europe, and he has just become a pupil of the portrait painter Carolus-Duran, in Paris.
Probably the next summer, he goes painting at Grez, a village on the edge of the forest of Fontainebleau, near Paris.
Grez is full of foreign painters and writers. It's very pretty, he writes to a friend, but a very nest of Bohemians.
He is about nineteen, and he sits in the shade of an arbour. Sunlight falls through the trellis and the leaves, onto a table with a white cloth.
And in front, on a silver tray, he paints two glasses of red wine. Perhaps they're for a couple. We never see them.
He works fast, wet paint into wet, watching how the white cloth and the glasses pick up the colours around them.
Later, he gives the little picture to his teacher, Carolus-Duran.
Many years on, it passes through dealers in Paris and collectors in England, and in 2018 it comes to the National Gallery, in London.
Look at the light through the leaves, and the two glasses, waiting.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
