Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Lise with a Parasol
From $100
Renoir painted this riverbank fast, in touches of red, orange and cream, and a dull copy turns it brown. Our print of the Seine at Argenteuil Renoir painted in 1873 was graded beside the original so the bushes stay warm, the water stays blue and the sky keeps its light.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x12 inch, 20x16 inch, 24x18 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, a bedroom or a study. The warm reds and oranges with soft blue look lovely with cream, terracotta and natural oak, and a natural or gold-toned frame suits it.
About the painting
Renoir was thirty-two, the son of a tailor, and often too poor to buy paint. His friend Claude Monet had moved in 1871 to Argenteuil, a small town on the Seine just outside Paris, and the river there became one of the favourite subjects of the new painters.
Here a bank of red, orange and green bushes runs down to pale blue water, with a sandy path along the river and the village and its church spire low on the far side. Half the picture is sky, laid in with quick, creamy strokes.
The next spring Renoir showed six paintings at the first exhibition of the group soon called the Impressionists. This small canvas, 46.5 by 65 centimetres, belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted this riverbank the year before anyone had heard the word Impressionist.
Argenteuil, a small town on the Seine just outside Paris. Summer, 1873.
Renoir is thirty-two. He's a tailor's son who started out painting flowers on porcelain, and there are times when he can't even afford paint.
His friend Claude Monet lives here now. The two met as students, and a few summers ago they set up their easels side by side on the river.
Here, Renoir looks along the bank. Bushes of red, orange and green tumble down to pale blue water.
A sandy path follows the river, and on the far side the village sits low, with a church spire.
Half the picture is sky, laid in with quick, creamy strokes, as if he had to catch the light before it moved.
The next spring, he and his friends hold an exhibition of their own in Paris. Renoir shows six paintings.
A critic mocks them as Impressionists, and the name sticks.
Today this small canvas hangs in the Musée d'Orsay, in Paris.
Look at the bank, and see how little he needed to make it glow.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.

No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
