Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This is Van Gogh’s quieter starry night, and its whole mood lives in the blues. We graded it against the original, faithful to every colour while bringing back the depth of the river and the gold of the gaslight on the water, so the stillness he found by the Rhône comes home with it. Hang it as a Starry Night Over the Rhone canvas, or framed.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x12 inch, 20x16 inch, 24x18 inch, 30x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
The long landscape shape belongs above a bed, a sofa or a low sideboard, where the blue can settle a room. At 30x24 inch it carries the wall alone. It sits well with navy, slate and natural linen, and the smaller sizes pair with Café Terrace at Night, painted the same month in the same town.
About the painting
Van Gogh wanted to paint the night. He had moved to Arles that February, and in September he walked down to the river Rhône after dark. The town’s gas lamps shine orange and stretch in long gold lines across the water. Down by the water, a couple walks together along the shore.
Look above the far shore. That is the Big Dipper, the Great Bear, painted in sparks of pink and green, like jewels. Many people mix this up with The Starry Night, which he painted a year later. That sky swirls. This one is calm, and the Starry Night Over the Rhone painting has a quiet peace the later one never tries for.
Almost everything here is blue. The sky, the river, even the shadows on the shore. Van Gogh painted the night full of colour instead of plain grey, the water in short, thick strokes and the lamplight in heavy gold. On your wall, it is that slow walk by the river, waiting for you every evening.
Vincent van Gogh once moved a group of stars across the sky, to fit them into his painting.
Arles, in the south of France, late September 1888.
Three minutes from his little yellow house, the river Rhône runs wide and dark past the town.
He has just got the house ready, with a spare bedroom for whoever comes to join him.
Nobody has come yet.
So at night he takes his paints down to the river.
Across the river the gas lamps are small and weak; on his canvas they burn gold.
Their light runs down into the water, red-gold and green-bronze.
He paints the river deep royal blue, the town blue and violet, and the sky green-blue.
And over it all he sets the Great Bear, its stars sparkling pink and green.
But here is his secret: from where he is standing, the Great Bear is behind him.
He wants it in the picture, so he turns the sky around and hangs those stars over the river.
Near the bottom he adds a couple, walking arm in arm along the bank.
He is thirty-five, and he lives alone.
A year later it hangs in an exhibition in Paris, one of the few times Paris sees his work while he lives.
The couple are still walking, under the stars he moved.
Stand on that bank for a moment. The lamps are lit for you, too.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
