Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This field is painted in long bands of white, pink, yellow and blue, and a dull copy turns the flowers grey. Our Van Gogh bulb fields print was graded beside the original so each strip of colour stays clear under the soft grey sky.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x12 inch, 20x16 inch, 24x18 inch, 30x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, a kitchen or a sunny bedroom. The soft pinks, blues and creams look fresh with white, linen and natural oak, and a natural or white frame suits it.
About the painting
In early 1883 Vincent van Gogh was in his second year in The Hague, teaching himself to paint in oils. This is his first garden painting: plots of hyacinths grown by a Dutch bulb merchant, in strips of colour that run toward a row of thatched farmhouses.
When it was first shown, in 1902, it was called Tulpenland, tulip land, even though the flowers are hyacinths. One small figure walks between the beds under a grey Dutch sky.
He left it with other early work at his family’s house. Years later a carpenter who was storing it sold it with other “rubbish” to a merchant. Collectors bought it after that, and Paul Mellon gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1983.
Vincent van Gogh's first garden painting was once sold off as rubbish.
It's early 1883, and Vincent is in his second year in The Hague, teaching himself to paint in oils.
A Dutch bulb merchant grows hyacinths in long rectangular plots.
Vincent paints them in flower, in strips of white, pink, yellow and blue that run toward a row of thatched farmhouses under a grey Dutch sky. One small figure walks between the beds.
A couple of years later he leaves the painting, with other early work, at his family's house in Nuenen.
When his widowed mother and his sister move to Breda, the paintings go with them, and in the end they're stored with a carpenter.
In 1902 the carpenter sells them to a merchant, along with other rubbish.
That same year it's shown under the name Tulpenland, tulip land, even though the flowers are hyacinths.
Collectors buy it after that, one after another, and in 1983 Paul Mellon gives it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Look at those bands of colour, painted by a beginner, and think how close they came to being lost.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
