Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This field is a mass of broken violets and pale yellows, and a muddy copy loses it all. Our Van Gogh Enclosed Field with Peasant print was graded beside the original so the violets stay clear and the hills keep their light.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
20x16 inch, 30x24 inch, 40x32 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, an office or the space above a sideboard. The violets and soft yellows look calm with stone, sage and natural oak, and a natural wood frame suits it.
About the painting
In October 1889 Vincent van Gogh was living in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, and from it he painted the walled field he had already painted with a reaper at harvest. Now it was ploughed, with the rocks of the Alpilles behind.
He described it to his brother: “A peasant dragging a bundle of straw in the middle,” a thistle and dry grass in front, a bit of blue-green sky with small white and violet clouds. Instead of almost all yellow, he wrote, it was almost all violet.
To his friend Émile Bernard he wrote that his health had firmed up, and that this canvas would prove “I haven’t yet gone soft.” The painting belongs to the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
Vincent van Gogh painted this field to prove he hadn't gone soft.
It's October 1889, at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, in Provence.
Below his window is a walled field. In the summer he painted it at harvest time, with a reaper cutting the wheat.
Now it's autumn, and the field has been ploughed.
He paints it on a big canvas, with broken lilac furrows, and behind them the rocky hills of the Alpilles, rising almost to the top of the picture.
A thistle and some dry grass grow in one corner. And in the middle walks a little figure in violet and yellow.
He describes it to his brother Theo. A peasant dragging a bundle of straw in the middle, he writes. Instead of being almost entirely yellow, like the reaper, it makes an almost completely violet canvas.
To his friend Émile Bernard he explains that his health has firmed up, and that he has more control over himself.
That will prove, I hope, he says, that I haven't yet gone soft.
Today the painting belongs to the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
Find the little man with his straw, crossing the violet field, and remember the painter at the window above, working his way back.
Enclosed Field with Peasant. Vincent van Gogh, 1889.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
