Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This portrait sets a green dress against a flowered wallpaper, and a dull copy flattens the pattern. Our Van Gogh la berceuse print was graded beside the original so the greens stay deep and the flowers keep their colour.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x20 inch, 24x30 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its upright shape suits a living room, a bedroom or a family room. The greens, reds and soft pinks look rich with sage, cream and walnut, and a dark wood or gold frame suits it.
About the painting
In January 1889 Vincent van Gogh had just come home from hospital, after the crisis in which Paul Gauguin left Arles. He went back to a portrait of Augustine Roulin, the postman’s wife, holding a rope that rocks a cradle we cannot see.
La Berceuse means the lullaby, and he called the colours a lullaby too. He painted five versions and let Madame Roulin choose one. Here she sits in Gauguin’s own chair, in the place he had left empty.
In May 1889 this canvas went to Gauguin, as a sign of friendship, to hang between two paintings of sunflowers. It now belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
This painting was a peace offering, sent to the friend who had walked out on Vincent van Gogh.
It's January 1889, in Arles. A few weeks ago, after a terrible crisis, Paul Gauguin left the Yellow House, and Vincent ended up in hospital.
Now he's home again, and he goes back to a portrait he had started of Augustine Roulin, the postman's wife.
She sits with her hands in her lap, holding a rope. At the other end of it, out of sight, is a cradle she is rocking.
He calls the picture La Berceuse, the lullaby, and he calls its colours a lullaby too.
He paints it five times. I let her choose between them, he writes, her and her husband, since Mrs Roulin was the model and I was only the painter.
And in this version, she is sitting in Gauguin's own chair, filling the place he left empty.
In May, Vincent sends this canvas to Gauguin, as a sign of friendship.
He wants it to hang between two of his paintings of sunflowers.
Today it belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Look at the rope in her hands, and think of the lullaby he hoped would bring his friend back.
La Berceuse. Vincent van Gogh, 1889.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
