Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This sea is painted in thick, knife-laid blues and greens, and a flat copy loses its waves. Our Van Gogh seascape print was graded beside the original so the water keeps every shade from green to violet and the white crests stand up off the canvas.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
16x12 inch, 20x16 inch, 24x18 inch, 30x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, a bedroom or a bathroom, and it brings the sea to any wall. The blues, greens and whites look lovely with white, navy and driftwood tones, and a white or natural wood frame suits it.
About the painting
In early June 1888 Vincent van Gogh took a week away from Arles at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean, hoping to rest and to find new subjects. He stayed at a small boarding house near the beach.
The sea, he wrote, was the colour of a mackerel, always changing, so you could never quite tell if it was green or violet. He seems to have painted this canvas outdoors in the wind: grains of sand are still caught in the paint. He laid on the waves thickly, partly with a palette knife.
Three sailing boats ride out on the swell, and down in the corner he signed his name in big red letters, to stand out against the water. The week gave him nine drawings and two paintings. This one belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
There's still sand in this painting, from the beach where Vincent van Gogh painted it.
It's early June 1888. Vincent has been living in Arles, in the south of France, since the winter.
Now he takes a week away at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean, hoping to rest and to find something new to paint.
He stays at a little boarding house near the beach.
The sea surprises him. It's the colour of a mackerel, he writes, always changing, so you can't tell whether it's green or violet.
So he carries his canvas down to the shore and paints it there, in the wind.
Grains of sand blow into the wet paint, and they're still there today.
He lays the waves on thickly, some with a palette knife, so the white crests stand up off the canvas.
Out on the swell, three small sailing boats lean into the wind.
Down in the corner he signs his name in big red letters, to stand out against all that green and blue.
The week gives him nine drawings and two paintings. This one belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Stand on the beach with him. Feel the wind, and watch the colour change.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
