Questions about sizes or framing? Ask us

This sky is built from thick, swirling strokes of blue and gold, and a flat copy turns it into a smudge. Our Van Gogh Starry Night print comes from a museum scan of the original, graded so the blues stay deep, the stars burn yellow and every brushstroke keeps its swirl.

Canvas, framed or paper

Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.

Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.

Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.

Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.

Sizes

20x16 inch, 30x24 inch, 40x32 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.

On your wall

Its landscape shape belongs above a sofa, a bed or a desk, and it works in any room that needs colour. The blues and golds look striking with navy, white, brass and warm wood, and a black or natural frame suits it.

About the painting

The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

Saint-Rémy, June 1889

In May 1889 Vincent van Gogh went into the asylum at Saint-Rémy, in Provence. From the window of his room he looked east over walled fields to the hills. “This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise,” he wrote, “with nothing but the morning star.”

A sky in motion

He painted the view by day in his studio downstairs. The brightest star, beside the cypress, is Venus, the morning star. Above the hills the sky turns and rolls, the moon is a blazing crescent, and the village with its church spire, which he could not see from his window, he added himself.

The one he called a failure

He called it “a new study of a starry sky”, and later, to a fellow painter, a failure. That September he sent it to his brother in Paris. Since 1941 it has belonged to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and it is one of the most famous paintings in the world.

Vincent van Gogh painted the most famous night sky in the world, and he called it a failure.

It's June 1889, at Saint-Rémy, in the south of France.

A month earlier Vincent went into the asylum here, of his own accord. He is thirty-six.

From the window of his room he looks east, over walled fields towards the hills.

One morning he writes to his brother that he has seen the countryside from his window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star.

He paints that view by day, in a studio downstairs.

The morning star is there, beside the cypress. It's Venus, shining low before the dawn.

Above the hills the sky turns and rolls in great swirls, and the moon is a blazing crescent.

Down below he adds a village with a church spire, one he can't actually see from his window.

He calls it a new study of a starry sky. Later, writing to a fellow painter, he calls it a failure.

That September he sends it, with other canvases, to his brother in Paris.

In 1941 it arrives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the world comes to see it.

Look at that sky, and decide for yourself whether he failed.

The Starry Night. Vincent van Gogh, 1889.

Questions

Is this the original painting?

No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.

Will the colour look flat?

This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.

Will the edges be cropped?

Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.

Which size is right for my wall?

Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.

How long does it take?

Your piece is printed in 1–3 business days, then spends 5–12 business days in transit, tracked all the way. Delivery is free anywhere in the US. We are unable to deliver to PO boxes.
