This table is six blues against four or five yellows and oranges, and a dull copy muddies them all. Our Van Gogh still life with coffee pot print was graded beside the original so every blue and every yellow stays distinct.

Canvas, framed or paper

Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.

Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.

Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.

Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.

Sizes

16x12 inch, 20x16 inch, 24x18 inch, 30x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.

On your wall

Its landscape shape suits a kitchen, a dining room or a breakfast nook. The blues and yellows look fresh with white, cobalt and pale oak, and a white or natural frame suits it.

About the painting

Still Life with Coffee Pot, Dishes and Fruit by Vincent van Gogh

Arles, May 1888

In May 1888, his first spring in Arles, Vincent van Gogh set out his breakfast things and painted them. “This week I’ve done two still lifes,” he wrote to his brother Theo, and described this one object by object.

Six blues

“A blue enamelled tin coffee-pot, a royal blue and gold cup, a pale blue and white chequered milk jug,” a white cup with blue and orange designs, a majolica jug, “and lastly 2 oranges and 3 lemons; the table is covered with a blue cloth, the background is yellow green, making 6 different blues and 4 or 5 yellows and oranges.”

It can stand beside it

A month later he painted a big harvest scene he thought killed everything else, “there’s only a still life with coffee-pots and cups and plates in blue and yellow that can stand beside it.” It is now in a private collection.

Vincent van Gogh counted the colours in this breakfast table, one by one.

It's May 1888, his first spring in Arles, in the south of France.

He sets out a coffee pot, some jugs and cups and a few pieces of fruit, and paints them.

This week I've done two still lifes, he writes to his brother Theo, and he describes this one, object by object.

A blue enamelled tin coffee pot. A royal blue and gold cup. A pale blue and white chequered milk jug. A white cup with blue and orange designs, on a yellow grey plate. A blue majolica jug. And lastly, two oranges and three lemons.

The table is covered with a blue cloth, he writes, and the background is yellow green, making six different blues and four or five yellows and oranges.

He's proud of it. A month later, he paints a big harvest scene that he thinks is better than anything else he has done. The only picture that can stand beside it, he says, is the still life with the coffee pots and cups and plates, in blue and yellow.

Today the painting is in a private collection.

Count the blues on that table, and see a painter learning to make colours sing together.

Still Life with Coffee Pot. Vincent van Gogh, 1888.

Questions

Is this the original painting?

No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.

Will the colour look flat?

This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.

Will the edges be cropped?

Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.

Which size is right for my wall?

Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.

How long does it take?
