Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This street is all yellows against a deep cobalt sky, and a careless copy turns the sky grey. Our Van Gogh yellow house print was graded beside the original so the house stays sunny yellow and the sky stays deep blue.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
20x16 inch, 30x24 inch, 40x32 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, a hallway or a study. The yellows and deep blue look cheerful with white, navy and natural oak, and a natural or white frame suits it.
About the painting
On 1 May 1888 Vincent van Gogh rented four rooms in a yellow house on the Place Lamartine in Arles. He meant it to be a studio and home for painters, and that autumn his friend Gauguin came to live there for nine weeks.
In September he painted it: “a sulphur sun under a pure cobalt sky.” The yellow house is on the corner, with green shutters; next to it is “the restaurant where I go to dine every day,” and at the end of the street two railway bridges.
The real house was badly damaged in a bombing raid on 25 June 1944 and later pulled down. The painting belongs to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, on loan to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
The house in this painting no longer exists, but for a few months it was the centre of Vincent van Gogh's world.
It's September 1888, in Arles, in the south of France.
In May, Vincent rented four rooms in a yellow house on a corner of the Place Lamartine.
He means it to be a home and studio for painters, and he's waiting for his friend Paul Gauguin to come.
Now he paints it: a sulphur sun, he writes, under a pure cobalt sky.
The yellow house stands on the corner. Next to it is the restaurant where I go to dine every day.
At the end of the street, two railway bridges cross the road.
That autumn, Gauguin does come, and lives there with him for nine weeks.
In June 1944 the real house is badly damaged in a bombing raid, and later it's pulled down.
The painting is all that's left. It hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Look at the green shutters and the yellow walls, and stand on the corner where it used to be.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
