Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This is a painting of thick, moving strokes, gold below and blue above, and a dull copy flattens the clouds. Our Wheat Field with Cypresses print was graded beside the original so the wheat stays golden, the cypress stays deep green and the clouds keep their curl.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
20x16 inch, 30x24 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, a study or a dining room, above a sofa or a sideboard. The golds, greens and blues look wonderful with cream, sage, navy and warm wood, and a natural or gold-toned frame suits it.
About the painting
In the summer of 1889 Vincent van Gogh was living in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, in Provence, and painting in the fields around it. The tall, dark cypresses of the south had caught his eye, and he painted them again and again.
In early July he wrote to his brother: “I have a canvas of cypresses with some ears of wheat, some poppies, a blue sky like a piece of Scotch plaid.” This is that canvas, probably painted out in the field, the wheat ripe and gold, the clouds curling across the sky.
He counted it among his best summer pictures, and in September he painted it twice more in his studio: one is in the National Gallery in London, a smaller one he gave to his mother and sister. This first version came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1993.
Vincent van Gogh liked this wheat field so much that he painted it three times.
It's the summer of 1889, at Saint-Rémy, in Provence.
Vincent lives in the asylum here, and on good days he goes out to paint in the fields around it.
The tall, dark cypresses of the south have caught his eye, and he keeps coming back to them.
In early July he writes to his brother about a new canvas.
It has cypresses, he says, some ears of wheat, some poppies, and a blue sky like a piece of Scotch plaid.
He probably painted it right there in the field, with the wind moving through the wheat.
The wheat is ripe and gold, the cypress rises like a dark green flame, and white clouds curl across the blue.
He thinks it's one of his best summer pictures.
So in September, in his studio, he paints it again at the same size. That one is in London today.
Then he paints a smaller one, as a present for his mother and his sister.
This first version, the one from the field, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Stand at the edge of the wheat, and look up at that plaid sky.
Wheat Field with Cypresses. Vincent van Gogh, 1889.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
Your piece is printed in 1–3 business days, then spends 5–12 business days in transit, tracked all the way. Delivery is free anywhere in the US. We are unable to deliver to PO boxes.
Send us a photograph and we will remake it and send it again. There is nothing to return.
