Vincent van Gogh
Prisoners Exercising
From $100
This harvest is painted in soft pinks, grey-greens and ochre, and a heavy copy loses its quiet. Our Van Gogh women picking olives print was graded beside the original so the pink sky stays soft and the olive leaves keep their silver.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
20x16 inch, 30x24 inch, 40x32 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its landscape shape suits a living room, a bedroom or a dining room. The soft pinks and grey-greens look calm with linen, sage and pale oak, and a natural or white frame suits it.
About the painting
In December 1889 Vincent van Gogh was living in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, painting the olive groves around it. He made a study of women picking olives on the spot, then this painting in his studio, from memory.
He wanted, he wrote, “a far-off thing like a vague memory softened by time.” The field is violet and yellow ochre, the trees have bronze trunks and grey-green leaves, the sky is pink, and the three figures are pink too.
“There are only two notes, pink and green,” he wrote, “which harmonize, neutralize each other, oppose each other.” This version belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Vincent van Gogh painted this olive harvest from memory, so that it would feel like a memory.
It's December 1889. Vincent is living in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, in Provence, surrounded by olive groves.
The olives are being picked, and he goes out and paints women gathering them, right there on the spot.
Then, back in his studio, he paints the scene again, from memory.
I want a far-off thing, he writes to his brother Theo, like a vague memory softened by time.
He describes the colours. The field is violet, and further away yellow ochre. The olive trees have bronze trunks and grey-green leaves. The sky is entirely pink, and the three little figures are pink too.
There are only two notes, he says, pink and green, which harmonize, neutralize each other, oppose each other.
He makes one more version of it, for his mother and his sister.
This one belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Look at the women among the twisted trees, and see the harvest the way Vincent wanted to remember it.
Women Picking Olives. Vincent van Gogh, 1889.
Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
