John James Audubon
Canada Goose
From $80
This is a print on paper, and a careless copy bleaches it white or turns the red to orange. Our Audubon cardinal print is taken from the engraved image on the Havell plate, in a warm cream, so the male’s scarlet and the leaves’ green stay true.
Stretched canvas. Printed on cotton canvas and stretched taut over a frame. The edges are mirror-wrapped, so the picture continues around the sides and none of it is lost to the fold.
Framed canvas. The same canvas, set in a black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame 0.83 in deep. The frame gives the work a finished edge and a little more presence on the wall.
Framed print. Printed on fine art matte paper and framed in solid pine, behind shatterproof plexiglass, in black, white, natural wood or dark wood. It arrives ready to hang. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame.
Fine art print. Printed on 310gsm fine art matte paper, for framing your own way. It travels rolled and protected. From 18x24 inch.
12x18 inch, 16x24 inch, 20x30 inch, 24x36 inch. Framed sizes are measured on the outside of the frame, so the visible painting is a little smaller.
Its warm red and green suit a kitchen, a living room or a holiday wall. They look lovely with cream, sage and natural wood, and a natural wood or white frame keeps it warm.
About the painting
John James Audubon set out to show every bird in America at its real size, engraved in London and coloured by hand, one plate at a time. This Cardinal Grosbeak is plate 159, issued in 1833. I have represented a pair of these beautiful birds, he wrote, on a branch of the wild olive.
People called it the Red Bird, or the Virginia Nightingale. Its song began loud and clear, he wrote, like the finest notes of a flageolet, then died away in the air. In spring the male swelled his throat, spread his rosy tail and leaned from side to side, as if about to faint with delight at his own voice.
It came right into the streets of southern towns to nest, and in winter joined the doves and sparrows in the farmyard. Go where it may, Audubon wrote, it is always welcome.
People called this bird the Virginia Nightingale.
Audubon thought no other bird in America could match it, for its colour, its grace, or its song.
He found it all over the South: deep in the swamps, in orchards and gardens, even in the streets of the towns. Go where it may, he wrote, it is always welcome.
In Florida, he finds the birds already paired in February.
In spring the male won't let another male come near. He chases his rival from bush to bush, then flies back to his favourite tree and sings in triumph.
The song starts loud and clear, Audubon says, like the finest notes of a flageolet, a little flute, and then slowly dies away in the air.
As he sings, the male swells his throat, spreads his rosy tail, and leans from side to side, as if about to faint with delight at the sound of his own voice.
He sings from before sunrise until the heat of noon, rests a while, then starts again as if he had never sung at all.
In winter he joins the doves and sparrows in the farmyard, picking up the grain put out for the hens.
In 1833 the plate is finished in London. I have shown a pair of these beautiful birds, Audubon writes, on a branch of the wild olive.
Look at him, scarlet above, his mate below, and imagine the song.

Faithful to the original, and made to be felt on your wall.
We compare every work with the original as we grade it, keeping the artist’s colours true while bringing back their depth and glow. Every mark stays the artist’s own.
Printed to order on cotton canvas or fine art paper, then framed if you chose a frame, in 1 to 3 business days.
It arrives 5 to 12 business days later, tracked and free anywhere in the US. Framed pieces come ready to hang.
No. The original hangs in a museum. What you receive is a fine art reproduction, remastered from the original and printed for you, with every mark where the artist left it.
This is where most reproductions disappoint, and it is where we spend the most time. Each work is graded side by side with the original: faithful to the artist’s colours, with the depth and warmth brought back, so it moves you on the wall the way it was meant to. Canvas reads a touch softer than a backlit screen, and every screen shows colour a little differently.
Each size is a standard frame size, so we fit the painting by trimming a little from its edges. We never stretch or squash it, and we check every size by eye so no face, figure or signature is cut. On canvas the edges are mirror-wrapped, which keeps the whole picture on the front.
Aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over a sofa or a sideboard, one of the two largest sizes will hold the wall. The size guide lists every size in inches and centimetres, with the kind of wall each one suits.
